POCHOIR MEETS COLLAGRAPHY!
This class is a unique pairing of two very different, but very versatile printmaking techniques. The focus will be on collagraphy, making creative handmade print plates using found objects, and pochoir, handcrafting reusable stencils, for use in a variety of printmaking applications both on and off the press.
Collagraphy, is a printmaking process in which materials are glued or sealed to a rigid substrate to create handmade print plates. You will have the opportunity to experiment with a variety of found objects, repurposing numerous materials into infinitely-creative designs and motifs. The plates will then be printed on the press, via a wet-paper method, which helps to highlight the unique textures and values achieved via the varied materials of both low and high relief plates.
Pochoir is the French word for stencil. Stencils, in their most basic form as pigment-resisting materials, are one of the earliest known forms of printmaking and artmaking in general (think: prints of hands-on cave walls done with blown earth pigments). In the pre-digital days of illustration & design, stencils were used to achieve rich colors and patterns, and are still a viable means of art creation for many applications. In this class, we will delve into the creation of handmade stencils from a variety of materials, and learn unique ways to apply them to your art repertoire, both as a printmaking device and for use in and with other media. Drawing the Face: Creating Emotion & Drama
This began as a multi-session class: Faces, Features & Figuration (6 consecutive Tuesdays, beginning on February 20, 2024), but you can now sign up for individual sessions. This class will focus on developing emotion & drama with gradation using controlled lighting: combining a sense of “real life” light & shadow with creative choice. We will be working with facial drawing techniques and explore how to translate those into more realistic portrait drawings. We will dive into the basics of facial proportion, facial feature placement and composition and tackle tricks to better “set” the features into a face. Developing mood and emotion will also be introduced. Plastic Possibilities: Printing Intaglio & Monotype on Plexi
🔍In this 3-session class (consecutive Wednesdays), we will explore the development of texture and value through different types of mark-making via two different printmaking techniques using acrylic printing plates and wetted paper, run through the printing press. One method we will use is dry point intaglio, employing pointed etching tools to “draw” a fixed image design from which a small edition of prints will be made. The other method will focus on exploring more painterly and gestural marks done with a brush and other tools on an open plate, to create various singular-edition monotypes. All materials will be provided. If students wish to purchase extra paper, they may do so at Townsend Atelier’s on-site store.
